Proposed raw milk rules – please write to the Department of Ag!

Dear DRA member,

Local food is a huge part of what we do – because it is a huge part of what YOU do. We need your help now to support our local raw milk producers.

The Department of Agriculture has put out some of the most restrictive rules we have ever seen to regulate raw milk (you can read them here). It’s not that they’re trying to just regulate the sale of raw milk; the rules actually restrict your right to offer or provide raw milk on any basis. In other words, you wont be able to milk your cow or goat and let your neighbors drink it without getting a permit.

These rules create more red tape producers must go through to sell their milk to paying customers, some of which go as far as to potentially put farmers out of business. Lila Streff, owner of Black Hills Goat Dairy and a DRA member, is very concerned that if the new rules pass it will greatly impact the availability of raw milk not only to those who are interested in purchasing it, but to those who choose to freely consume it.

Please write in to the Department of Agriculture and ask them to remove the new rules and restrict current rules to the sale of raw milk only, rather than regulating all raw milk consumption. You can also just write a short letter on your own, and mail it here:

South Dakota Department of Agriculture
Ag Services
523 E. Capitol Ave.
Pierre, SD 57501

Letters must be received by next Wednesday, June 5.

Also, if you are able, the Department is holding a hearing on the rules Thursday, June 6 at 12:30pm CT in room 414 of the Capitol building. If you can attend, please let us know and we will help you coordinate with others going to testify.

If you live in Rapid City, we will be holding a practice hearing Monday, June 3, at 6:00pm at the VFW, 420 W. Main Street. Please come to help coordinate carpools and testimony.

  1. I have written the Sec of Ag about this. I have expressed my concerns, opposition, and requested my objections be forwarded and entered into the hearing.

    • Rep. Nelson – thank you! Several other legislators have expressed their objection and are looking at legislation to bring next session to ensure our raw milk producers can continue to run their businesses. We’ll definitely keep you in the loop.
