Update on teacher pay

by Bill Powers

Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels recently (as of Monday, March 1) indicated that in consultation with the legislature’s leadership there is general concern over increasing property taxes to pay for education. Local property taxes have doubled over the last few years. In seeking relief for local tax payers, there is a growing consensus that the general fund for education need to increase. He says that a 1.5% increase in general funding for education is required by law, the Governor offered an additional 0.5%, and there is now a growing consensus for adding an additional 1.5% to the general fund. This would represent a 3.5% increase in general funds for education, much of this made available for increases in teacher salaries. Michels believes that this increase could still be realized in the 2015 legislature. I have not yet seen any legislation reflecting this intention, but I will now be looking for it.
